Diana Krall

Is a singer and pianist, born November 16th 1964 in Nanaimo (British Columbia) Canada.

Diana’s close relationship with music started because of her father - a amateur pianist and real music enthusiast, who’s magnificent record collection has become the foundation to his daughter future repertoire. Krall began her music lessons at the age of four and has soon become a regular member of several school bands. She than started to gain her first income, whilst still in High School by playing the piano in local restaurants.

A few years later Diana has been granted a musical scolarship in the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, where she spent two years mastering the piano. Diana has than made the decision to relocate to Los Angeles and enter the world of professional jazz musicians. She was lucky to meet many of the stars, that she once knew from listening to their records. The most important encounter was with a double bass player, Ray Brown, Kral’s next mentor. Ray has encouraged Diana to continue her education as a pianist and convinced her about the extraordinary voice she has.

Diana Krall returned to her hometown Canada to record her debut album and than made another move. This time to East Coast of USA - New York. A  that time she has already been hailed “the Canadian Next Big Thing” whilst still in her late 20’s. Krall’s first US album featured many of her friends, to name Ray Brown and a tremendous saxophone player Stanley Turrentine among others. Once this album ws finished Diana met her second big mentor - an experienced music producer Tommy LiPuma, who’s already worked with Barbra Streisand, Natalie Cole and George Benson.

The key to Diana Krall’s massive international success proved to be her unique repertiore. As a vocalist and piano player, Diana has singlehandly revived the American Classical Songs singing, musical scores from the 40’s and 50’s, and compositions from George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, Nat King Cole or Burt Bacarach.

Diana Krall deffinately hes her own unique style: a captivating tone of voice and a real swing drive in her fingers, that makes the simplies of keys join together beautifuly with the rhythm section of her band. Diana also combines the coctail piano player cool and the elegance of the True Blues Lady! She emanates the most refined and exquisite type of sexuality whilst keeping a cool and calm face. As once said: Diana Krall is the ideal combination of many different divas in one body.

Diana Krall has also broken down many myths and stereotypes of the music industry. She’s proven, that making classical jazz albums can be successful, bring you many awards and acclaims, and make money. The breakthrough was the “When I Look In Your Eyes” LP from 1998, that has not only spent 52 weeks (an entire year) on top (!) of the Jazz section of Billboard (an impressive achievement) but also brought her a Grammy Award as “Best Jazz Female Singer” and a nominee in the “Album of the Year” (first in 25 years for a Jazz Album).

Krall’s prestigious worldwide tournee in 2001 resulted in recording her first live album - “Diana Krall - Live In Paris”. This album has also featured many of the contemporary mainstream songs recorded by artists outside the world of jazz music like “A Case Of You” by Joni Mitchell or “Just The Way You Are” by Billy Joel. Diana’s first live album has also become an important step ahead in her musical repertoire.

In 2003 Diana Krall married a well known musician and composer mostly active in the rock gender (but not only) - Elvis Costello. This marriage and the influence of Elvis can be found in Diana’s later compositions and her next album “The Girl In The Other Room from 2004. Encouraged by her housband, Diana got more into songwriting and composition.

A return to the well known ground has been her for far latest album “Quiet Nights” (from 2009) which featured the popular Brazilian bossa nova in tremendous new arrangements by an experienced maestro Claus Ogerman.

Lately Diana has also featured on the piano in Paul McCartney’s album “Kisses On The Bottom (to be released in February 2012). This album also features jazz and mainstream music standards sang by the legendary Ex-Beatle.
